My sweet Ethan was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes on Monday morning. For about the last month, he had been peeing and drinking like crazy. I kept thinking he was just drinking because he was active and that he was peeing because he had been drinking. On Friday and Saturday of last week, I noticed that his energy level had dropped. But on Sunday, I noticed the most scary changes. He kept wanting to lay down and sleep, and he was SO slow moving and just listless. We ended up leaving Sacrament right after taking the Sacrament because I looked over at Ethan and he looked like he was going to drop out of his chair. When the kids went to bed that night, I looked up diabetes on the internet because I had been suspecting it for about a week. He fit pretty much every symptom. I went into my room and just sobbed because I KNEW he had diabetes. I made an appointment right then to take him in to the doctor on Monday morning. At 3:30 a.m. Ethan woke up throwing up and complaining of horrible stomach pain. When I saw him, I was so sad. He was so pale and looked so thin and sickly. By the time we got to the doctors office, Ethan was acting kind-of confused and really out of it, he could barely walk. They tested his blood sugar and urine. The doctor said his blood sugar was 438 and ketones in his urine were1000, which are REALLY high numbers. I wasn't so shocked when she told me the diagnoses. But when she told me that he had ketoacidosis and he needed to be immediately transferred to Primary Childrens by ambulance, I lost it. I didn't want Ethan to be scared, so I asked that if he was stable enough, if I could just drive him to the hospital right then. So thats what we did. Monday was a total nightmare. He had to have an I.V. put in because of the extreme dehydration. His veins are so little, so they had to try 3 times before getting it in. Ethan was so brave, he didn't cry at all, and when the nurse kept saying she was sorry he kept saying that it was okay. Next was the I.V. insulin. That was kind-of scary because in some cases, it can cause swelling of the brain. So we had to really watch him. He was also throwing up because of the stomach pain. Tuesday was better, he finally got to eat, which he was dying to do and we got to take out the I.V. and start the normal insulin shots. Tuesday and Wednesday we just did tons of learning. We had nutrition classes, pharmacy classes, nursing classes, and diabetes classes. We had to learn all about counting carbs and dosing and giving his insulin shots. We then spoke to nurses, doctors and a social worker so they could decide that we were competent and confident enough to take him home. I guess we did pretty well, because we weren't supposed to be released until Thursday night or Friday morning and we were released this afternoon. We were never so happy to be home!!! Ethan has been awesome and so fearless, I am so proud of him. What a strong boy he is! He has been testing his own blood sugar and has no fears of his shots or the diabetes. He has a great attitude about the whole thing. It totally SUCKS, but it is something we can totally handle. I am just so happy that everything turned out well and I have my talkative, active, wonderful Ethan back!!! I love him more than he will ever know!!!
